About Discounted Fares for Seniors, Disabled Persons, and Students

Several transit agencies offer discounted fare media for seniors, disabled persons, and students. To purchase these discounted farecards from The Commuter Store™, Seniors may present any ID showing age. Students must present student ID or other ID noted in product descriptions below. Disabled persons under the age of 65 must have a Metro Disability ID Card or other proof of disability. To purchase online from Commuter Direct.com, seniors, persons with disabilities, and students must set up an account and have the appropriate ID on file. Discounted items will appear in the list of items for sale only when you are logged in with your Commuter Direct™ username and password. Metro Non-Date-Specific Fare Media

Most non-date-specific passes do not expire at any particular time; they are valid until their fare value is used up. A few of the products in this list are gate-activated passes—they are valid for 7 days beginning when the pass is first used to enter the Metrorail system. The last valid date is printed on gate-activated passes the first time they are used.

About the Metro system

10-count Metrobus Token Pack ($13.50). Pack of 10 bus tokens, each valid for the regular fare of $1.35. Tokens also can be used on express routes for $1.35 of the $3.00 fare. Also accepted on ART and other regional bus providers. Order online

SmarTrip card, ($5, no fare value included). A permanent, rechargeable farecard that can hold up to $300 in Metrorail value. Fare value can be added at Metrorail farecard machines and on Metrobuses. More information | Order online

Regional One Day Bus Pass ($3.00). a full day of unlimited rides regionwide on regular Metrobuses and other local buses. On express buses, the pass covers $1.25 of the $3.00 fare. Pass expires at 3 a.m. Not available online - purchase from the bus driver.

Metrorail Farecards. Paper farecards, available with $10 and $20 fare value. Order online

One Day Rail Pass ($7.80). Gate-activated pass valid for one day of unlimited Metrorail travel on weekdays after 9:30 a.m. or all day on Saturdays, Sundays or federal holidays. Pass expires at midnight. Order online

7-Day Short Trip Pass ($26.40). Gate-activated pass valid for seven consecutive days from the first day of use for Metrorail trips costing up to $2.20 between 5:00-9:30 a.m. and 3-7 p.m. on weekdays. Pass is valid for any rail trip at other times. If trip costs more than $2.00, you must use the Exitfare machine to pay additional fare. Pass will be returned for continued use during valid period. 7-Day Fast Rail Pass ($39.00). Gate-activated pass valid for seven consecutive days from the first day of use for unlimited Metrorail travel. Order online

Senior/Disabled Rail Farecards ($10). Reduced-price rail farecard that deducts one-half the regular fare for each trip not to exceed $1.95, are available only to senior citizens (65 years of age or older) or qualified people with disabilities. About purchasing discounted fares for seniors and disabled persons.

Senior/Disabled SmarTrip card ($5). Rechargeable SmarTrip card that deducts one-half the regular fare for each trip not to exceed $1.95, are available only to senior citizens (65 years of age or older) or qualified people with disabilities. No fare value is included. About purchasing discounted fares for seniors and disabled persons.

Metro Access 5 Pack (12.50). Five $2.50 Metro Access fares. Each covers the cost of one single Zone trip. 

Metro Date-Specific Fare Media

Date-specific passes are valid during a specific 7-day calendar period set by WMATA.

About the Metro system

Metrobus Weekly Pass ($11). Valid for a full week of unlimited travel regionwide on regular Metrobus routes. It's valid for $1.25 of the $3.00 fare on express routes. Order online

Metrobus Weekly Disabled Pass ($6). Valid for a full week of unlimited rides on all routes. About purchasing discounted fares for seniors and disabled persons.

Metrobus Weekly Senior Pass ($6). Valid for a full week of unlimited rides on all routes. About purchasing discounted fares for seniors and disabled persons.

Transit Link Card

Transit Link Card (TLC) for MARC and VRE (cost varies with fare zones). One monthly ticket provides unlimited rides on Metrorail and MARC or Metrorail and VRE. Also valid on Metrobus and other D.C. area bus services. (Available on the Commuter Direct.com order forms for MARC and VRE.)

About the MARC Train Service system

Single-Ride (One Way) Ticket (cost varies with fare zones). Good for one-way travel between the zones indicated on the ticket. Pass expires 60 days from purchase date. Order online.

Unlimited Weekly Ticket (cost varies with fare zones). Good for unlimited travel between the stations indicated on the ticket beginning on the Saturday of the designated week until midnight of the following Friday. Weekly tickets can be used on Montgomery County Ride-On Buses and MTA Bus, Light Rail, and Baltimore Metro Subway service. Weekly tickets can be used on WMATA's Metrobus system, good for the base fare on all Metrobuses in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Virginia. Order online

Unlimited Monthly Ticket (cost varies with fare zones). Good for unlimited travel between the stations indicated on the ticket during a calendar month. They are non-transferable, but partially refundable up to the 10th service day of the month. Monthly tickets can be used on Montgomery County Ride-On Buses and MTA Bus, Light Rail, and Baltimore Metro Subway service. Monthly tickets can be used on WMATA's Metrobus system, good for the base fare on all Metrobuses in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Virginia. Order online

Transit Link Card (cost varies with fare zones). Allows unlimited travel on MARC and Metro for one calendar month. The TLC can be used on Montgomery County Ride-On Buses and MTA Bus, Light Rail, and Baltimore Metro Subway service. The TLC can also be used on WMATA's Metrobus system, good for the base fare on all Metrobuses in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Virginia. Free connections are provided to Laurel Corridor Transportation Corporation (Laurel CTC) and Prince George's County The Bus. Order online

Discounted MARC Fares

MARC Student Discounts. Students are eligible for a 15% discount on all MARC tickets except TLC and disabled passes. To receive the discount at The Commuter Store™, students must show a Student Advantage Card and a valid student identification card. To receive the discount when purchasing online from CommuterDirect.com, students must open a CommuterDirect.com account and mail a photocopy of the two cards to: CommuterDirect.com Customer Service, PO Box 12176, Arlington VA 22219. The Student Advantage Card can be purchased online at www.studentadvantage.com or by calling 1-800-333-2920. Cost is $20 for one year or $50.00 for four years, plus a $2.50 shipping charge. Seniors and Disabled Fares - 50% Savings. MARC offers reduced fares for seniors (age 65 or older) and for persons with disabilities. About purchasing discounted fares for seniors and disabled persons.

MARC Ticket Refund Policy

Single-ride tickets are non-refundable. Weekly tickets are refundable if return postmark dated no later than 11:59 p.m. the Friday prior to the effective week. Monthly and TLC tickets are refundable, based on return postmark date, as follows:

  • Postmarked prior to effective month = 100% refund
  • Postmarked 1st through 5th of effective month = 75% refund
  • Postmarked 6th through 10th of effective month = 50% refund
  • Postmarked after the 10th of effective month = 0% refund
  • TLC ticket refunds will not include the $80 Metro portion after the 1st of the month

Virginia Railway Express (VRE)

Prices of VRE Tickets depend on start and destination points. A fare calculator is available on the CommuterDirect.com VRE order form.

About the VRE system

Single Ride Ticket (cost varies with fare zones). Good for one-way travel between the fare zones indicated on the ticket, including all zones in between. Tickets can have up to two single rides per pass. Single-Ride tickets must be used within six months of the first day of validation. They are transferable, but non-refundable. Single-Ride tickets are NOT accepted on Amtrak trains. Order online

Round Trip Ticket (cost varies with fare zones). Two single ride fares (see description above) on one ticket. NOT accepted on Amtrak trains. Order online

5 Day Pass (cost varies with fare zones). Good for unlimited travel for five consecutive VRE service days from activation within the zones indicated. 20% savings. Order online

Ten-Trip Ticket (cost varies with fare zones). 15% Savings. Very Economical, good for ten one-way trips between the fare zones indicated on the ticket. Ten-Trip tickets must be used within six months of the first day of validation. They are transferable, but non-refundable. Ten-Trip tickets are accepted on select Amtrak trains (see schedule). Multiple persons can travel on one ticket as long as there is one validation per passenger. Order online

The Monthly Ticket (cost varies with fare zones). 30% Savings. Your best bargain. Good for unlimited travel between fare zones indicated on the ticket during a calendar month. They are non-transferable, but refundable up to the 15th service day of the month. Monthly tickets are accepted on select Amtrak trains (see schedule). Order online

The VRE-TLC (Transit Link Card) (cost varies with fare zones). The VRE-TLC is a Metro card that allows unlimited travel on VRE and Metrorail, and the ART, DASH, Fairfax Connector and Ride On bus systems for one calendar month. The TLC also covers up to $1.25 of Metrobus rides, and is valid wherever Metro runs in Virginia, Maryland or the District of Columbia. Order online

Discounted VRE Fares

Seniors, Disabled and Youth Fares - 50% Savings. VRE offers discounted tickets for persons with disabilities, senior citizens and youths (ages 21 and under) at 50% off the cost of a single-ride ticket. Children six and under may ride for free when traveling with an adult. About purchasing discounted fares.

Effective July 1, 2008: ART Full-Fare (Gold) Tokens, 15 bag ($20.25). Valid for full $1.35 fare on all ART routes. The ART system also accepts Metrobus tokens as full fare. Order online

ART iRide (Green) Tokens, 20 bag ($10). These tokens can only be used by students with a valid middle or high school ID. Available only from The Commuter Store.

DASH

About DASH and other local transit systems

DASH Monthly Pass ($30). Date-specific pass allows unlimited rides within the City of Alexandria for the calendar month. This pass replaces the DASH Base Pass and DASH Pentagon Pass, and is not valid on Metrobus. Order online

In addition to the STAR service itself, three area taxicab companies offer discounts to seniors and persons with disabilities through the STAR program.
