Launched in 1999 during National Poetry Month, Moving Words makes poetry a part of daily life for commuters in Northern Virginia and promotes the work of local writers. The poems are viewed by approximately 1.3 million Metro bus riders every month. In 2009, in honor of its 10th Anniversary, the Moving Words Poetry Competition expanded beyond Arlingtons borders to include poets who live within the entire DC Metro transit zone.
Six poets are featured from April through September; they are selected through an annual competition with a deadline in January. From October through March the poems of twelve Arlington Public School students are selected for display through a partnership with the Arlington Public Schools Humanities Project. The poems are exhibited in Metro buses that traverse Arlington County, Alexandria, Falls Church, Fairfax County, and Fairfax City.
Moving Words is a program of the Cultural Affairs Division of the Arlington County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources and is sponsored by the Arlington County Department of Environmental Commuter Services (ACCS) and Metro, to make your ride more enjoyable.
