Transit Studies and Projects

Arlington has been conducting studies for its Metrorail stations to determine pedestrian access patterns, usage of the different station entrances, and projected new development in the vicinity.  As a result, planned or recently completed improvements to stations include:

  • new bus transfer facilities at the Pentagon, Rosslyn, Crystal City and Pentagon City;
  • a new canopy at Virginia Square, with others planned for Clarendon, Crystal City and Pentagon City;
  • new station entrances planned for Ballston and Rosslyn;
  • a new station entrance at Court House being studied;
  • a new bus transfer facility at Shirlington.

A recent Bus Stop Evaluation Program surveyed the approximately 1,500 bus stops in Arlington. The study looked at conditions at each stop and identified needed access improvements for pedestrians of all abilities. As a result, 100 bus stops are slated for improvements. In addition, Arlington is beginning a design process for new shelters and other amenities for the bus stops along Columbia Pike.

For the future, Arlington is participating in studies aimed at providing a higher capacity transit such as a streetcar, tram or electric bus along the Columbia Pike and Jefferson Davis corridors.  Modern transit vehicles running along the streets, with their large windows and visible interiors, would enhance the pedestrian environment by making the transit riders themselves a part of the streetscape.
