BikeWalk Virginia
This education and advocacy organization whose interests include the benefits of biking and walking; safe biking and walking practices, and the benefits of creating biking and walking friendly communities across the Commonwealth of Virginia.  

CityStreets
A New York City-focused pedestrian rights and advocacy group with a bit of a guerilla style and mission! 

One Less Car
Maryland Campaign for Bicycling and Walking advocates for providing safe and effective cycling and walking for all citizens through education, lobbying, and facilitation between communities, governments, and state and local representatives.

Surface Transportation Policy Project
The goal of the STPP is to ensure that transportation policy and investments help conserve energy, protect environmental and aesthetic quality, strengthen the economy, promote social equity, and make communities more livable, with an emphasis on the needs of people, rather than vehicles, in assuring access to jobs, services, and recreational opportunities. STTP also sponsors the Mean Streets awards.

WalkBoston
A membership organization that promotes walking for transportation, health and recreation through education and advocacy, with a mission of creating and preserving safe walking environments that build vital communities.

Bike and Pedestrian information for the City of Alexandria.

FHWA Bicycle and Pedestrian Program
The Federal Highway Administration's Bicycle and Pedestrian Program Office is responsible for promoting bicycle and pedestrian transportation use and safety.

Maryland Bicycle and Walking Directory
Includes information on contacting officials, organizations, and individuals interested in improving bicycling and walking in Maryland.

Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center
A clearinghouse for information about health and safety, engineering, advocacy, education, enforcement and access and mobility. 

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Bicycle and Pedestrian Program
Promotes bicycling and walking within the state. Provides planning assistance to state and local transportation planners, activity coordination for various bicycle committees, and bicycle and pedestrian education and safety promotions.

WalkingAndHiking This UK-based website contains constantly updated resources on walking, including articles written by a team of experts. Ten new articles are posted each month.

WALKABLE COMMUNITIES

Active Living by Design
A national program of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in partnership with the UNC School of Public Health in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and numerous other organizations to establish and evaluates innovative approaches to increase physical activity through community design, public policies and communications strategies.

America Walks
A non-profit national coalition of local advocacy groups dedicated to promoting walkable communities. Mission: to foster the development of community-based pedestrian advocacy groups and to educate the public about the benefits of walking.

Living Streets
An organization that champions the cause of streets and public spaces for people on foot by working on practical projects to create safe, vibrant and healthy streets for all. (UK)

National Center for Bicycling and Walking
The mission of this  Bicycle Federation of America initiative is to create bicycle-friendly and walkable communities.

Perils for Pedestrians
A monthly cable-television series that promotes awareness of issues affecting the safety of people who walk.

Project for Public Spaces
PPS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating and sustaining public places that build communities. PPS provides technical assistance, education, and research through programs in various topical areas from parks to plazas to public markets and architecture.

Walkable Communities, Inc.
Established by pedestrian advocate Dan Burden, this nonprofit helps  communities become more walkable and pedestrian friendly.

"Walking the Way to Health" Initiative (WHI) 
This clever website may start you thinking a UK relocation strategy.  Here you can find a walking group; general information on health and walking, and the personal stories of walkers who have remedied every variety of health issue through walking.

TRAILS AND GREENWAYS

American Trails 
American Trails is a national, nonprofit organization working on behalf of all trail interests to create and protect America's network of interconnected trails. Among their initiatives: art on trails - plus, a state-by-state guide to trails organizations, agencies, and support groups, sorted by trail type.

Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal National Historical Park
National Park Service site with information about the 184-mile C&O Canal towpath, a great resource for hikers and bicyclists.

East Coast Greenway
When complete, this will be the nation's first long-distance, city-to-city, multi-modal transportation corridor for cyclists, hikers, and other non-motorized users - and it will pas through Arlington! 

Friends of the W&OD Trail
This non-profit organization is dedicated to the preservation, enhancement and promotion of the 45-mile trail that originates in Arlington and ends in Purcellville, VA. In addition to great maps, the site offers historical, parking access, flora/fauna and hotel/b&b information.

Rails-To-Trails Conservancy
RTC's purpose is to enrich America's communities and countryside by creating a nationwide network of public trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors.

Virginia Trails
