Transfers Made Simple

Metrobus to Metrobus Transfers

Metrobus transfers are free. If you are paying your fare in cash, ask the bus driver for a transfer. When using a SmarTrip card to pay your fare, you don't need the paper transfer. Transfers are valid on any Metrobus within the two-hour time period shown on the transfer. Metrobus will also accept transfers from local buses as shown in the Transfer Matrix below.

Metrorail to Metrobus Transfers

Free transfers are available when you ENTER the Metrorail station. When using a SmarTrip card to pay your fare, you don't need the paper transfer. Rail-to-bus ransfers are worth 85 cents toward your Metrobus fare. With a transfer, the passenger pays 35 cents to ride on regular Metrobus routes; $1.65 on express routes. Senior citizens and disabled riders with valid Metro ID or Medicare cards (and, on request, an addtional photo ID) ride Metrobus free with a rail transfer. Transfers are not valid for stopovers, return trips or within four blocks of where they are issued.
