SmarTrip®What is SmarTrip®? SmarTrip® is a re-usable transit fare card residents can use to pay for fares on all Metrorail routes and Metrobus routes. The SmarTrip® card is the same size as a credit card and uses an embedded computerized chip to make it easy for cardholders to add money to or deduct fares from their balance as they use Metro. By registering their cards, your residents can protect the value stored on their card. If a registered SmarTrip® card is ever lost or stolen, the owner simply needs to contact Metro to cancel the card and purchase a new card which will be credited with the owner's SmarTrip® card balance (minus the cost of the new card).
Using SmarTrip® eliminates the need for Metrorail fare cards or bus tokens. The card enables riders to pass through Metrorail turnstiles more quickly and board Metrobuses faster. Residents who receive tax-free transit benefits from their employers can have their benefits deposited directly to their SmarTrip®account. SmarTrip®can store up to $300 of value at a given time. In the future, SmarTrip® promises to ease access to a continually increasing number of transit options. Other transit providers including MARC and VRE are also planning to install SmarTrip® readers in the future. How can residents acquire a SmarTrip® card?
