Rides in the City History

Rides in the City was born over an informal working dinner in the winter of 2003, as we brainstormed a way to make transit fashionable. Our objective was to add some “urban hip” to an occasionally bland world, appeal to a new generation of commuters, and give a fresh, personalized voice to regional commuting.

The inaugural column of Rides in the City was published in January 2004. Originally appearing quarterly in Solutions newsletter, the concept has since mushroomed and become a monthly phenomenon in the world of public transportation (or at least we’d like to think so). With the Web site kick off in summer 2005, the concept has grown to reach commuters in Urban Villages from Ballston to Baltimore, Clarendon to Culpepper, Shirlington to Severna Park, and beyond (we hope).

Also with the birth of the Web site has come “Ask Christina”, an interactive page that allows readers to test Christina’s knowledge of transit trends. And of course, all roads (and Metro trains, ART buses, and bike paths) lead to our parent site CommuterPage.com, the honest-to-goodness one-stop-shop for all commuter needs, where the answers to most transit questions can be easily found (and if the answer isn’t on CommuterPage.com, just ask Christina!).

While we’re not soothsayers, and we don’t know what the future holds for Rides in the City, one thing’s for certain, public transportation will never be the same!
