Construction is well underway for the Shirlington Station, Arlington Countys first enclosed public bus station. This station will serve as the principal transfer point for Metrobus and ART bus service in Shirlington, one of Arlingtons growing urban villages. The station is located at the intersection of South Randolph Street and 31st Street South next to Shirley Highway (I-395) in Arlington and across from the Quincy Tower office building.
When complete, the Shirlington Station will include a Commuter Store, an indoor waiting area with customer seating and restrooms, five bus stops, bike parking, and car sharing. The outside plaza area will be partially roofed to provide customers protection from the weather. The station will incorporate state-of-the-art technologies to provide information, safety, and security. The Commuter Store will be staffed to sell transit passes and assist customers.
Arlington will own, operate, and maintain the bus station. Metro (the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority WMATA) is managing the design-build contract on behalf of the County. The contractor, Grunley-Walsh, began construction this past March. The contractors designer, URS, completed the design drawings and the County approved the construction building permits in October of 2006. Construction is scheduled to be completed by Spring 2008 and the grand opening will occur soon after.
This past January Arlington County completed the purchase of the adjacent parking lot needed to expand the construction site and allow for enough area to build the station and provide off-street bus stops. During construction of the Shirlington Station, 12 to 14 parking spaces will remain available in the adjacent parking lot for the Quincy Tower retail tenants and their customers. A temporary driveway provides access the parking spaces and fencing separates the construction area from the parking area. When the Shirlington Station is completed, the County plans to convert the adjacent parking lot to a shared use lot for bike parking, car sharing spaces, and metered public parking along with Quincy Tower customer parking.
