Potomac Yard Busway Project
Project Description
The Arlington County Board approved a Phased Development Site Plan (PDSP) for the 35-acre Potomac Yard South Tract, which includes a reserved corridor for a transitway (i.e., busway) through the development. This separate 26-foot-wide busway will be constructed for bus-only service from the city/county line to 26th Street South in Crystal City. The County is planning to construct the exclusive right-of-way along Potomac Avenue, East Glebe Road, and Crystal Drive. Covered station platforms will also be constructed along this busway for passenger convenience and safety. The busway stations will include real-time passenger information, signage, benches, and security features. Arlington County is exploring opportunities to extend the exclusive busway north through Crystal City as redevelopment occurs and hopes to develop the busway to Pentagon City and the Pentagon in the future as well.
Schedule
- Environmental study process and initial design work are in progress.
- Start of construction is targeted for late 2006 or early 2007 subject to the federal governments review and approval of environmental documentation.

Crystal City/Potomac Yard Corridor Interim Transit Improvement ProjectImplementation Strategy
Project Description
Arlington County and the City of Alexandria worked together, with the help of the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, to develop an implementation plan to increase transit options and provide greater mobility in the Route 1 corridor serving Potomac Yard and Crystal City. The project involved a review of land use development occurring and planned in the corridor. The project also involved numerous meetings with stakeholders and residents in the corridor. In response to the rapid growth in land use development and traffic, the project team developed a plan for implementing high quality, high capacity, frequent bus service in the five-mile corridor between the Pentagon and Pentagon City in Arlington and Braddock Road Metrorail Station in Alexandria. The implementation plan is described in the summary report completed in December of 2005. Crystal City/Potomac Yard Project Summary (PDF).
